Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus

Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus

Driven by the FNOB, the University of Barcelona and the Consortium El Far, the Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus is a platform for open educational courses based on science, the humanities and technology disciplines as applied and developed through the Barcelona World Race (BWR), the first and only double-handed, non-stop, round the world yacht race. This initiative is part of a collaboration agreement signed in April 2013 by the three institutions, to assist in the dissemination of knowledge and learning potential associated with the BWR.

Available on the Instructure Canvas platform from November 2014, the courses are fully open and have certification from the University of Barcelona in collaboration with Inlea, specialising in virtual learning institution.

The Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus course are 'MOOC's, which is an acronym for "Massive Open Online Course", a teaching and learning format adopted by major universities across the world to transmit knowledge in the form of online content with free access. These courses require payment only if the student requests academic certification.

The Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus was founded with the aim of bringing together and disseminating a wide range of knowledge inherent in offshore sailing through a rigorous academic format. The campus begins with five courses from the disciplines of Meteorology, Medicine, Food and Nutrition, Oceanography and Chronobiology, with material offered in Catalan, Spanish and English. The courses take place from November 2014 to May 2015, and each lasts approximately six to eight weeks.

A doubly unprecedented initiative

The Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus is a pioneer in the world of ocean sailing experience. For the FNOB this is a natural extension of the race's Educational Programme, which has led the way in harnessing the teaching and learning potential of offshore sailing in schools across Spain. With the MOOCs, the FNOB goes a step further by taking that knowledge to university, providing students, professionals, or simply sailing, sports, science and technology enthusiasts the opportunity to learn more for free.

For the University of Barcelona this is also a brand new initiative; and whilst the prestigious university is currently working on a number of different projects, the Barcelona World Race Ocean Campus is the very first MOOC to be published by the institution.

The content has been developed jointly by professors from the University of Barcelona and staff at the educational and publishing department of the Barcelona World Race. Instructors include specialists from institutions such as the Hospital Quirón Teknon and the Institute of Marine Sciences, CSIC, and leading specialists across all of the course subjects.
